Trust and transparency are must-haves when wrestling with vulnerability. After years of stage performances and bedroom songwriting, Abbie Painter (they/them) found a new creative partner in Jordan Hartsfield (they/them) shortly after posting their artistic intentions in a Philly DIY Facebook group. Quarantine allowed Abbie to confront their relationship with themselves and their body, coming out as non-binary to close friends in summer, and starting hormones at the start of the school year. This new project would use authenticity and liberation as its cornerstones, grieving former selves and celebrating future comfort zones. After a Zoom introduction and an inaugural practice, Naked Lake was born, bursting forth with geyser-like focus and intention.
Naked Lake’s debut full-length Should We Go Home Now? maps out Abbie’s journey from discomfort to contentment, with lyrics that would come together in less than ten minutes and recording schedules that were a race against time. After writing the album opener “Baby Girl” as a reassuring note to their family, Abbie resolved to frame the album as a timeline of their transition. “I said I wanted to write a song for every month that I’m on testosterone,” they remember. “I wanted to have something to look back on. Even when I listened to early mixes, I got so emotional because I felt someone got it and was there for you no matter how much doubt or instability you’re having.”
The road home is littered with roadblocks, a challenge that the LP seeks to topple and dismantle. “Good Mourning” swishes around pangs of grief and self-medication in the wake of leaving a woman’s body, and Abbie hijacks a Sunday mass to liken a trans-masc form to “Pictures of God.” Across arrangements that dip into the roomy wonders of chamber-pop and harness synth-kissed thunder, self-compassion seeps through the uneasiness of recalling what once was yourself, your home, and your heart. Amid comforting odes to supportive partners (“Polythene”) and constructing self-love out of flimsy building blocks (“Fairyhouse”), curiosity and fearlessness keep emotions at the forefront. By the time the anthemic closer and title track passes its floating sensations off to the listener, Naked Lake has lovingly found themselves a place to land with care and confidence.
